It’s no secret that a large number of fruits and vegetables in the diet, as well as the rejection of processed meat products are good for us. But is vegan nutrition good for skin health?
Many celebrities say yes: Natalie Portman and Billy Eilish have noticed significant improvements in their skin condition since they abandoned dairy products and went vegan.
- Portman told Cut magazine several years ago:
- “I’m a vegan and noticed that now my skin is much better than when I was a vegetarian. “I refused dairy products and eggs and after that I never returned to them.”
- Eilish, who became a vegan for ethical reasons, shared in a Tumblr post in 2018:
- “I have lactose intolerance. Dairy products are terrible for your skin, and my skin is aware of this. ”
- However, not only celebrities believe that veganism is good for your skin, experts also note the enormous benefits of plant-based nutrition. Blade Thyssen, a cosmetologist who owns an Ontario Anti-Aging Care Clinic and has been working in the skin care industry for 33 years, believes that abandoning animal products in favor of healthy vegan nutrition can have a “tremendous effect”.
Can a vegan diet help get rid of acne?
Numerous studies suggest that avoiding dairy products can help those suffering from rashes. Acne is the most common skin-disease in the world.
There are several different theories about why dairy products can cause skin rashes. Some studies note that hormones in cow’s milk are at fault, because they are designed to stimulate calf growth. When people use them, they stimulate the production of insulin in the body, which can cause rashes.
According to a medical article published in the journal Health line, “sometimes hormones in milk can also interact with our own hormones, disrupting the body’s endocrine system and causing a rash.”
Plant Pure Communities (PPC) recently launched a social media campaign called Ditch Dairy for Clearer Skin, a social media campaign. The campaign targets to inform the public about the relationship between rashes and the use of dairy products.
In an accompanying article, pediatrician Jackie Busse, MD, a member of the academic community at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), says:
“Giving up dairy products is the first and most important dietary change you must make to prevent or treat acne.”
Vegan diets can also help people with eczema, a disease that causes areas of the skin to become inflamed, itchy, and flaky. According to Health line, several studies have shown that a vegan raw food diet can be very beneficial in this regard, but strong evidence is still insufficient.
Will a vegan diet help with psoriasis?
Plant-based nutrition also helps fight psoriasis, an immune disease that causes bulging, red, flaky spots to appear on the skin, just like eczema.
Eating only whole plant foods can help psoriasis sufferers, as there are very few inflammatory foods in this diet, says licensed nutritionist Diadry Earles. She was once hospitalized with psoriasis, but switching to a plant-based diet helped her cope with the disease effectively.
I dramatically changed my diet. I removed all dietary cola, all complex processed foods and replaced them with simple, whole, mainly plant foods. Six months later, my skin cleansed, ”she shared with Everyday Health magazine. She added: “Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease, so anything you can do to reduce inflammation should help.”
The reality TV star and entrepreneur Kim Kardashian-West has been suffering from psoriasis for more than ten years, and recently she was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. On her sister’s website, Courtney Kardashian Poosh, she shared a story about her fight against the disease and how the switch to a plant-based diet helped her:
“I like to lead a healthy lifestyle, try to eat plant foods as much as possible and drink cocktails from sea moss,” she said, adding that she is also trying to minimize stress. “I hope my story would help other people with autoimmune disease feel confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Can vegan nutrition make your skin radiant?
Veganism can not only help cope with the painful conditions of the skin, but also make it radiant.
According to Thyssen, vegan patients have more beautiful skin. They also have more energy and sleep better. The doctor says:
“A healthy vegan diet that does not contain inflammatory foods, along with drinking plenty of water, good sleep, exercise, stress reduction, skin care will provide her with a beautiful glow for life.”
She also recommends using exclusively vegan skin care products.
“Skin care implies its nutrition and protection,” the beautician explained. “Nourishing the skin with organic substances of plant origin can give it benefits that are not available in chemicals or components of animal origin.”
