  1. Sandeepa Handa Bhambri says:

This is the story of my Mother-in-law Srimati Usha Bhambri. Born into a very rich family in Punjab (now) in Pakistan and fled to India during partition. They left everything and came to settle in Delhi. I have lived with her for the past 30 years since my marriage. She was 79 years old when she left our world last. She was also a vegan during the last 3 years of her life.
She had always been vegetarian and a religious Hindu, doing bhajans and reciting prayers every single day for more than 45 years. However, she did not feel any love for animals, though she never hated or harmed any. When we rescued and adopted our injured street cat ‘Kitty,’ she was angry, unhappy and discouraging. She tried to persuade us to give up our cat out to a shelter. But, my sons and I loved Kitty too much to give her up. Mom never loved her, but later accepted her as a family kid, without touching her at all. She never allowed Kitty on her bed and it was a relief that they somehow coexisted.
It was my son Sahil Bhambri who discovered animal-cruelty videos online and told us about the cruelty involved in the making of all animal products. This shocked us all. My son Naman Bhambri was the first one to ditch all cruelty. Simultaneously my husband Bhupinder Bhambri too agreed. Our whole family decided to adopt a vegan, cruelty-free lifestyle.
My sons tried to explain to their grandmother too. Mom said, “I have always hated meat and eggs etc. and everybody consumes milk and dairy. All online stuff is fake and a lie.” At first, she did not believe the facts about cruelty in the Dairy Industry. Also, she refused to watch cruelty videos.
We all stopped consuming and buying all animal products in mid-2015, except for mom’s 2 cups of tea, prepared in cow’s milk. I decided to try more and more delicious vegan recipes so that mom did not miss any tasty dishes although she never had too much of dairy products.
The only problem now was that she didn’t like the taste of any other plant-based mylk tea. It made her nauseous and she was addicted to milk tea. My sons kept on trying, bringing different plant-based milks for her tea. Though she enjoyed Sofit flavoured milk and my home-made milk from almonds, cashews, seeds and “Chhaachh” made from cashews and rice, etc … but still, she did not prefer our tea. Initially, she didn’t like the plant-based curd but later she started liking Raita/ sweet curd made from plant-based milk.
I used to try different plant-based milk teas, adding ginger/cardamom to mask the flavour, without telling her. Even all guests used to consume all those teas but she would quietly take a few sips and leave the rest. Sadly, this went on for a few months. My sons kept on trying to show her dairy cruelty and had many arguments too but she stuck to animal-milk tea.
One day, when Sahil forced her to watch how calves suffered, were abandoned and murdered in the dairy industry, we had an argument with her and we told her how lame, meaningless and useless all her bhakti was if she kept on torturing calves and mothers buffaloes and cows for her dairy. She watched the dairy industry video and pictures for a few minutes and had tears in her eyes. Ultimately she accepted that milk was very cruel. She said, “Hey bhagwan, insaan aisi kroortaa kaisey kar saktey hain bechaarey bezubaan janwaron par?” (Oh God! how can humans do such cruelty upon innocent voiceless animals?”)
That was the moment we all had been waiting for. She promised to try harder and to ditch tea addiction within a few days. We knew we could never force her as she was elderly and she felt the need for tea for her well-being. Then, my son brought Borges Rice & Almond Milk and told me to make tea with that. To our relief, she liked that tea. Soon, she adjusted to other mylk teas too.
She never developed any health issues specifically due to vegan living. She was fond of sweets and fried paranthas, which she continued having every day, all her life. She used to relish all-vegan sweets, homemade as well as store-bought.
One day, after watching Kitty for years, she said, “Animals are so similar to us, they feel different emotions like us. They just cannot speak our language but they express and understand everything. They are intelligent and deserve to live free.”
At the age of 75, from not being an animal lover, addicted to dairy tea and cold milkshakes, she gave up all social conditioning, her lifelong habits and beliefs about animals. She is a wonderful example of how one can transition to cruelty-free life at any age, in any religion, praying to their own God or Guru. Even though she was not an animal lover, she understood and accepted that she had no right to use, abuse and kill other beings for any selfish interest.
Losing one’s parents is very painful. I just wish to share with everyone that being an Ethical Vegan Family, we did not use any non-vegan, cruelty-laden thing in any of the rituals after her demise. Being a religious Hindu family, as per her final wish, we ensured that all the end rituals we performed were done in a plant-based cruelty-free manner – without any ghee, honey or milk.
We are so proud of her decision and our love and respect for her multi-folded!

  2. Bharat Goel says:

I am Bharat Goel from New Delhi, India. l am 29 years young and I have been a vegan for the last 11 years. I work in a public research firm as operations and communication manager. We are five members in my family who all are currently transitioning towards a vegan lifestyle.
Back in my school days, when I was in 10th grade, I used to weigh around 125 kgs. I used to have all different kinds of health issues related to excessive consumption of dairy products. I was taught and conditioned that a vegetarian diet along with dairy and eggs is the best diet for humans as it takes care of every nutritional requirement of a developing child. I was so wrong about that, as every health problem I suffered right from ‘hormonal imbalances’ to ‘early child osteoporosis,’ were all linked to dairy and animal product consumption. I had no means to attribute this to dairy back then as it would be impossible to think in that direction, especially when the propaganda and marketing for the continued use of such products was so loud.
It just happened by chance that one fine day while scrolling through YouTube I mistyped a keyword which led me to the documentary series called “Health and Happiness” by Walter Vieth, a Professor of Medicine and Head of Research at the University of South Africa. Within minutes of watching it, I was hooked on to it. Basically, that series talks about why one should not be consuming animal products like eggs, milk, meat and everything that comes from animals, and how one will reap diminishing returns out of it over a period of time if consumed, in the form of many lifestyle diseases and disorders.
The logical scientific explanations backed up with clinal trials in detail convinced me to go vegan and I instantly stopped consuming animal-based products.
I reaped rich dividends as my body started getting rid of all the accumulated toxins and junk and start detoxing towards better health. Later on, I got to know about the deep-rooted corporate lobbying and practices that were pushing out biased scientific research against plant-based foods and eulogizing the benefits of animal products.
Then I started subscribing to various organizations and collectives speaking up for animals and that in turn inspired me to transition into an Ethical Vegan.
My entry into vegan activism occurred by chance when I happened to attend a vegan potluck organised by local vegans. For many years, like most vegans, I believed that I am the only vegan in my city. I was pleasantly surprised to see many vegans in my own city doing fantastic work for animals and spreading the message of veganism. It again was an instant decision to become an activist for the sake of animals.
I want to see a day when people start speaking about veganism without any prejudices and biases. I am working towards bringing veganism into the media’s limelight so that it can play its part in the mainstream discussions, through participative in television shows; petitioning the government and allied departments and engaging them in consultations and awareness; giving talks in schools and colleges, and using every other public platform available.
Another aspect of spreading veganism is to increase vegan products in the market. We need to encourage food and beverages sector and its participants to start introducing plant-based products.
Ever since I started studying Marketing and Finance in my college days, I realized that I enjoy analyzing things that are connected to Society and Mother Nature. I believe travelling as well, has somehow further boosted my outlook towards veganism as today I see it as a solution to many of our current social issues. It surely has given me positive results with respect to my own health.
My message to readers is that veganism is the easiest solution available at our disposal to take care of the rainforest destruction, human health issues, climate change and animal cruelty. Also, if the whole world would go vegan then we would be taking care of food security and feed everyone sustainably without anyone requiring to go to sleep hungry.
Veganism is ‘not putting fuel to the fire’ and is the easiest solution that we can also directly control. Why wouldn’t someone wanna go vegan if they’re claiming to be an intelligent, compassionate, rational and level headed thinker?

    **FROM A NON-VEGETARIAN TO A VEGAN**
How a meat loving Muslim boy turned into an animal rights activist (vegan).
I was never an animal lover. I disliked dogs because I was taught that they are dangerous and they bite humans. As I was born in a Muslim family, animal cruelty was nothing new to me. During Bakrid (Id-al-adha), I saw hundreds of cows, goats, camels being slaughtered mercilessly. I was encouraged to take part in the killings. I skinned cows and goats and chopped them to pieces. Then cooked and ate them. I saw nothing wrong in it. The conditioning and brainwashing was deep and strong. Everyone was doing it. Subconsciously, I thought it must be the right thing to do. All my meals included meat. I remember making fun of vegetarians by saying ‘Plants have feelings, eat stones’. And so it continued.
One day, my friend Sunny shared a Peta video on Facebook where a dog was being abused.I subscribed, liked and shared. Peta kept sharing animal cruelty videos (elephant abused in circus, monkey abused in zoo). I shared them and commented ‘Heartless assholes will burn in hell’. Simultaneously I kept eating dead bodies of cows, chickens, goats and fish.
One fine day, Peta shared a video titled ‘Horrors of dairy and poultry industry’. I watched the video and I couldn’t believe what I saw. I was shocked. Male baby chicks and male baby calves were being killed because they were not profitable and it is a standard practice. I cried that night. Couldn’t sleep. I decided that I will research more and if I find it all true, I will quit eating eggs and dairy.
A week later I quit meat ( I had stopped eating beef a year ago before going vegan because I found tumor in the piece of meat, also my dermatologist advised me to quit red meat). I had increased consumption of chicken (I loved to eat) and fish (I disliked). After finding out the truth about cruelty in poultry and dairy industries, I felt guilty every time I ate eggs or drank milk. Couple of weeks later I stopped consuming all animal products.
P.S : I became vegan 5 years ago and it was very difficult in the beginning (fights with meat lovers, slept hungry on many nights due to unavailability of veg food at home, mentally harassed and tortured, mocked, pieces of meat thrown at me, decapitated body parts of animals were sent on WhatsApp). Initially I knew only one vegan. Now I have vegan friends from all around the globe and I feel much strong.
My dream is Animal Liberation by 2030.
